Further to efforts in assessing application performance, redundancy, risks & opportunities, and the digitalisation level, it is critical for the overall consistency of the application portfolio to be considered. Collaborating with different domain experts will enable Enterprise Architects to ensure that applications are not only fit for purpose but also operate in a coherent manner that instils a level of certainty regarding the operation of applications and defined (and addressable) predictable patterns (a reduction of uncertainty and complexity).
QualiWare is a strategy to execution tool (including ideation), and there are extensive model templates from various frameworks and notations to address the organisation’s business architecture, application architecture, data architecture, technology architecture, and security architecture. When creating information system objects in the repository, it is essential to develop and capture information related to the other architecture domains (as mentioned above).
Linking business capabilities to information systems will help identify common platforms that contribute to delivering a business capability. As seen in the image below, multiple business capabilities are delivered by an information system.
The 3D Visualiser can then be applied to the information system to identify backward and forward relations.
Suppose one were to select a business capability. In that case, it can be determined that there are, in fact, nine information systems that contribute to the delivery of an individual business capability, including the information system that was initially selected.
Furthermore, it is also clear that multiple business-critical applications operate from a single server.
We can use this information because the organisation strategy in this example is aligned with Microsoft and avoids open-source. However, some existing integrated applications use open-source technology that would not be suitable for our cloud journey. This is an excellent example of identifying issues with portfolio coherency that must be addressed as part of the roadmap.
