Package Diagram

Purpose: The purpose of the Package Diagram is to group elements of a large system and illustrate the dependencies between them.

Core concerns: The Package Diagram can be used to organize a system’s parts and enables you to model Packages, Profiles and Annotations. These can be connected using Dependency, Profile Application, Package Merge, Package Import and Containment.

Below, you can see an example of a Package Diagram for a booking system for a car rental service:

 

Relation to other templates: The Package diagram offers a simplified view of for example a Class Diagram, grouping classes into packages. It should be used when a class diagram becomes too large and complex to easily read.

Properties and metadata: The Package Diagram template can for example retain the following information:

  • A description of the diagram
  • Link to the owner of the diagram
  • Link to the one responsible for the diagram
  • Audits (auto generated information regarding its current state and access rights)
  • Associated documents, diagrams and other objects
  • Inherent Risk detailing risk considerations
  • Governance information detailing information about the published diagram and who has been involved in the approval of the diagram

Business Operating Model

Purpose: The purpose of the Business Operating Model is to visualize how an organization functions and delivers value to its customers. The model presents a ‘one-page-overview’ of the organization and offers a quick way to communicate an organization’s value structure to different types of stakeholders.

Core concerns: The Business Operating Model can be put together in numerous ways including information on Stakeholders, Business Processes, Products, Projects, Channels, Key Performance Indicators and more. This enables you to create a Business Operating Model that reflects your organization’s specific value chain in detail. Below is an example of a Business Operating Model that shows a business’s suppliers, high-level processes, products & services, channels and customer segments:

Relation to other templates: The Business Operating Model is a strategic model that can be supplied with more detailed models such as a Business Capability Model, Requirement Models, Stakeholder Models and the Business Ecosystem Model.

Properties and metadata: The Business Operating Model can for example retain the following information:

  • A description of the diagram
  • Link to the owner of the diagram
  • Link to the one responsible for the accuracy of the diagram
  • Audits (auto generated information regarding its current state and access rights)
  • Associated documents, diagrams and other objects
  • Inherent Risk detailing risk considerations

Value Proposition Canvas

Purpose: The purpose of the Value Proposition Canvas template is to document the fit between specific customer segments and the value proposition targeted at them.

Core concerns: The Value Proposition Canvas template enables you to model Value Propositions and Customer Segments and populate them with objects by extending the modelling syntax (right click on the canvas, choose ‘Actions’ and then ‘Extended syntax’):

Below, you can see an example of a Value Proposition Canvas that has been populated by Objectives, Opportunities, Threats and Technology:

Relation to other templates: The Value Proposition Canvas is closely connected to the Business Canvas and should be seen as a more detailed view of elements from the Business Canvas’ Customer segment and Value proposition. As such, there could be multiple Value Proposition Canvases attached to a Business Canvas.

In a more general sense, the Value Proposition Canvas is a strategic model that should be viewed in relation to the enterprises Strategy Model, Enterprise Investment Portfolio and Strategic Roadmap.

Transformation Plan

Purpose: The purpose of the Transformation Plan template is to document strategic transitions over time in the form of transformation plans. Below is an example of a Transformation Plan consisting of a sequence of projects:

Core concerns: The Transformation Plan template should be used to document the transformation of a part of an enterprise from a current to a future state. Additionally, a past state can be documented for reference. The template allows you to model Projects, Initiatives and Business Cases, and connect them with Activity paths and generic Connections. Below is an example of a Transformation Plan that specifies Initiatives, their related Projects and Business Case:

Relation to other templates: The Transformation Plan template should not be used to document project plans for calculating a Critical Path. The Critical Path Method Diagram should be used for that purpose. The Projects can be further detailed in a Work Model that includes Milestones in its syntax.

Strategic Roadmap

Purpose: The purpose of the Strategic Roadmap template is to document initiatives and projects over time from the perspective of a specific narrative. Strategic Roadmaps are not static and should ideally be revisited and iterated upon.

Below, you can see an example of a Strategic Roadmap for the implementation of two systems:

Core concerns: Using the Strategic Roadmap, you can model Initiatives and Projects, Timeframes and, if needed, connections. The Strategic Roadmap should be given a limited scope of a department, a program, or a strategic initiative. Typically, the enterprise will document several strategic roadmaps from different perspectives and business units.

Below, you can see an example of a Strategic Roadmap describing a company’s asset management initiatives over four years:

Relation to other templates: The Strategic Roadmap can show strategic initiatives over time that may be shown in other strategic diagrams such as the Strategy Model. For a more extensive overview of projects you can generate a Gantt chart using the Business Chart template.

Stakeholder Model

Purpose: The purpose of the Stakeholder Model template is to document internal and external individuals or groups who have a stake in for example an enterprise or a project. Below, you can see an example of a Stakeholder Model of Order Management:

Core concerns: Stakeholders can be grouped via Business Scope. Stakeholder relations are illustrated via the Interaction connection. Beyond this, you can enrich the Stakeholder Model with Capabilities, Business Processes, Information Systems, Initiatives, and Projects. Below, you can see several groupings of stakeholders:

Relation to other diagrams: The Interaction connections in the Stakeholder Model can be broken down into Requirement Models. The internal structure of the organization is modelled in an Organization Diagram while the interaction between the organization and its external environment can be modelled in a Business Ecosystem.

Innovation Canvas

Purpose: The Purpose of the Innovation Canvas is to model ideas for Innovation detailing their goals and ideas for action.

Core concerns: The Innovation Canvas allows you to model an innovation detailing the ideas that exist in relation to it. In the example below, the goals of the innovation have also been defined and attached. Goals, vision, mission and many more strategic objects are available in the default extended syntax for the diagram, enabling you to model your ideas for innovation in as much detail as you prefer.

Relation to other templates: The Innovation Canvas is a strategic template and the elements modelled in it can easily be connected to other strategic templates such as a Strategy Model, Enterprise Investment Portfolio, Business Canvas or Business Capability Model.

Properties and metadata: The Innovation Canvas can for example retain the following information:

  • A description of the diagram
  • Link to the owner of the diagram
  • Link to the one responsible for the accuracy of the diagram
  • Audits (auto generated information regarding its current state and access rights)

Freehand Diagram

Purpose: The purpose of the Free Hand Diagram template is to document using drawings that do not match any of the other structured diagram templates.

Core concerns: The Freehand Diagram template enables you to, for example, insert a General Concept, paste a picture file on it and describe it using Freehand symbols. You can also link to other diagrams from it. The Freehand symbols used can be placed either on or behind the Picture you choose and present information or links when clicked on.

Objects available in the Freehand Diagram template:

The Free Hand Diagram template should not be used to document any information that can be documented in other templates.

Relation to other templates: The Freehand Diagram can, because of its flexibility, be related to any of QualiWare’s diagram templates. It can be a decomposition of Logistical Flows, Business Functions, Lines of Buisness, Business Scopes, Activities, Inventory and Information Systems.

Enterprise Investment Portfolio

Purpose: The purpose of the Enterprise Investment Portfolio template is to model enterprise goals and investments.

Core concerns: The Enterprise Investment Portfolio template enables you to model Goals, Projects, and Initiatives. The projects and initiatives can be connected to enterprise goals them through Project Contributions, that show the viable minimum and optimistic maximum of the value contribution. Below, you can see an example of an Enterprise Investment Portfolio, where the way goals are realized is visualized:

Other Functionalities: By using the Enterprise Investment Actions tab, you can create, for example, a Portfolio Value matrix, which offers another way to view the same data:

Relation to other templates: The Enterprise Investment Portfolio is a strategic template and is as such related to the enterprise’s Strategy Model, Strategic Roadmap, Business Canvas and Innovation Canvas. The projects contained in the initiatives can also be further described in the Work Model template.

Customer Journey Map

Purpose: The Purpose of the Customer Journey Map template is to document the customer’s journey from awareness to the end of their interaction with an organization, covering possible touch points from the customer’s perspective.

Core Concerns: The Customer Journey Map template allows you to model connections between different Personas, Customer Journey Phases, Touch Points, Goals, Roles, Locations, Channels, Technology and the aspects from a SWOT analysis.

You can choose to model both a current state and a desired future state of the customer journey and use the documentation for process improvement. Below is an example of a current state model and a future state model:

Other functionalities: The customer’s touchpoints can be elaborated upon with four scores for Customer Satisfaction, Customer Importance, Customer Effort and Net Promoter Score. Particularly vital touchpoints can be designated as a Moment of Truth.

Relation to other templates: The Customer Journey Map can be used as a groundwork for a strategic change, which for example can be modelled in a Work Model, a Business Capability Model and/or a Strategy Model.
